Detailed description of the workshops & masterclasses
Friday, Aug. 31st
14:00 — 17:30 Workshop I «Philosophy, Principles, Techniques – Applied to Standing Asanas»
We begin with theory and principles underlying the practical integration of functional anatomy, biomechanics, and kinesiology as the fundamental foundation of asana alignment and hands-on adjustments in all styles of yoga classes. Next, we apply these insights to standing asanas, beginning with basic externally-rotated hip standing postures and standing balance postures, with close attention given to alignment, energetic actions, modifications, variations, and various uses of props with each asana.
18:00 — 20:00 Masterclass «Integrated Practice: Asana, Pranayama, and Meditation»
Most yoga classes in the West are at least 95% postural practices, with ujjayi pranayama the only breathing techniques, and meditation often limited to a few minutes or less at the beginning or end of class. Here we explore a full practice, starting with sitting, breathing, more breathing with refined techniques as first described in detail in the 15th century Hatha Yoga Pradipika, then an integrated asana practice in which we explore all families of asanas (standing poses, core, arm support, backbends, twists, forward bends, hip openers and inversions), then go far more deeply into refined pranayama and heart-centered meditation.
Saturday, Sept. 1st
8:00 — 10:30 Workshop II *Deeper Exploration of Standing Asanas*
This session continues with the practical explorations we started in Part I, focusing on internally-rotated hip standing asanas and how best to guide them in flow-style and individualized teaching in ways that that help integrate and balance energy.
11:00 — 13:00 Masterclass «Breathing Into Heart Opening Backbends»
This classs begins with exploration of the breath, from natural breathing, ujjayi, viloma, sama/visama vrtti, kumbhaka, to kapalabhati pranayama techniques. We then move into a balanced Vinyasa Flow asana practice designed to gradually release into a series of progressively deeper heart-opening backbends before exploring a sequence of twists, seated and supine forward bends and hip opening asanas designed to help integrate and balance energy on the path to Savasana.
14:00 — 18:00 Workshop III «Backbends»
First, we explore guiding students in each type of back bending asana – contraction, traction, and Leveraged– including Salabhasana (Locust) ABC, Bhujanghansana (Cobra), Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward Facing Dog), Dhanurasana (Bow), Ustrasana (Camel), Laghu Vajrasana (Little Thunderbolt), Kapotasana (Pigeon), Setu Bandha Sarvanghasana Bridge), Urdhva Dhanurasana (Wheel), Viparita Dandasana (Inverted Staff) and Eka Pada Raj Kapotasana (One-Leg King Pigeon). We will focus on hands-on guidance and adjustments, use of props, and modifications that make each back bend more safe, accessible, and deeper.
Sunday. Sept. 2nd
8:00 — 10:30 Workshop IV «Seated and Supine Twists, Forward Bends, and Hip Openers»
While we have looked at twists, forward bends and hip openers in standing asanas, here the focus on their seated and supine forms, including Supta Parivartanasana (Reclined Revolved Pose), Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Lord of the Fishes), Bharadvajrasana (Noose), Marichyasana (Sage) C, Dandasana (Staff), Paschimottanasana (Western Stretch), Baddha Konanasana (Bound Angle, Gomukhasana (Cow Face) and others.
11:00 — 13:00 Masterclass «Hip-Opening Arm Balances in the Flow»
This master class begins with warming Surya Namaskaras and Dancing Warriors designed to open and stabilize the hips and shoulders in preparation for a series of beginning-to-advanced level arm balances (including Bakasana, Parsva Bakasana, Bhujapidasana, Tittibhasana, Astavakrasana, Eka Pada Koundinyasana, Galavasana, Urdhva Kukkutasana and Uttana Prasithasana). This complete practice also includes wrist and shoulder therapy practices to ensure the full integration of the practice.
14:00 — 17:00 Workshop V «Inversions & Arm Balances»
Turning our world upside-down, here we look closely at Salambha Sarvanghasana, Halasana, Karnipidasana, Urdhva Padmasana, Salambha Sirsasana I & II, Viparita Karani as well as Adho Mukha Svanasana (Down Dog), Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand), and a selection of other simple-to-complex arm balances (from Kakasana [Crow] and Bakasana [Crane] to Astavakrasana [Eight Crooks] and Uttana Prasithasana [Flying Dragon]).
