The Autumn School «Making of – Designing Process Architecture» aims to unfold, discuss and work on questions and aspects of dynamic complexity and multiple stakeholder involvement in planning, architecture and design.
The Autumn School addresses young professionals, PhD and master’s students with interdisciplinary backgrounds in related fields of study and practice. The Autumn School includes access to the one day symposium with international speakers. The four day workshops are hosted by practitioners with backgrounds in architecture, planning, design and applied social science.
«Making of – Designing Process Architecture»
Most results in planning and designing hail from a sequence of complex situations. Projects are formed and transformed continuously while moving through an open-end parcours of obstacles, controversies and negotiations. Decisions involve a heterogenous variety of stakeholders and the outcome for a great part becomes fairly unpredictable. Instead to fail with even more static imagery and resisting structures, or to reduce the multiplicity of stakeholder voices and the complexity of options, one can ask, what tools and strategies are needed to work with an within the dynamic complexity? Which new and different roles do (urban) designers, architects and planners take on? How would designs be redesigned and re-visualized when indeterminacy is recognized as an essential component? And how can the design of the processes themselves become a central task of the designing disciplines?

Aspects and Perspectives
DYNAMIC PLANNING: What instruments are used under the condition of dynamic complexity? Which strategies, tactics and alliances are deployed and how are controversies fought out in the course of realizing a project?
RECORDING PROCESSES: How to read, collect, record, visualize and archive the continuous flow of transformations during design and realization processes?
OPENING POSSIBILITIES: How to open and extend the variety of options during the process?
WRESTLING WITH MATERIALITY: How to convince «non-humans» like used building structures to take on a specific new role in the design and planning process?
USE-VALUE, EXCANGE-VALUE: How to introduce new roles, actors and models of land property and yield?
ENABLING THE STREET: How to manage complexity and diversity of interests and motivations? Tools, methods and experiences of broad public participation processes.
WHAT «SPACE» DO WE TALK ABOUT? How to build with the perspectives of social-spacial architecture?
OPEN FORM, STRUCTURE, FUNCTION: What are the rules and boundaries to make the «open» happen?
WE CLAIM: NOT THE PRODUCT, BUT PRODUCTION! New ways of self-empowerment and self-authorization in spatial and material production?
